Staff Spotlight: Mary O’Neill, Director of Recreation Therapy
We are excited to break out a new category on our website called “Van Duyn Spotlight!”
In this section, we will periodically spotlight individual team members of our exceptional and dedicated staff!
We may also highlight our group of world-class Doctors and Nurses!
Of course, from time to time we will also look to highlight some of our beloved residents!
For today’s inaugural blog, we’d like to spotlight our beloved Recreation Therapy Director, Mary O’Neill!
Meet Mary O’Neill – Director of Recreation Therapy at Van Duyn Center

Mary (on the right) with one of our staff during our 2017 egg hunt!
Mary brings over 20 years of extensive experience to the Van Duyn team.
Over the years, she has worked extensively with dementia/ Alzheimer care.
Mary received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation Therapy from SUNY Brockport and was certified under the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification. She was born and raised in Buffalo and remains a loyal Buffalo Bills Fan!
At the same time, living in Syracuse for 20 years has equally turned her into a die-hard SU Fan!
Mary brings her infectious smile and cheery disposition to everything she does and her zest for life is inspirational to all of us and to our residents!
In fact, one of our residents recently wrote this poem (pictured below) for Mary:
“Mary, you are always on the run
One of the reasons you are considered staff member # 1, as you sit behind your desk looking pensive, is that you are trying to plan a trip less expensive!
Whether a sporting event or a nice place to eat, we are happy to enjoy a nice treat!
As Activities Director, you have gone through many a test, which is why you are one of the best!
You are the reason very few grumble, because you manage to stay quiet and humble!
No matter day or year, you always show little fear and much cheer!!
You always know how to relax and rest, which is another reason you are the very best!
In closing we’d all like to say, we think you are great and HAVE A NICE DAY!”
