Patriot Day 2026

Remembering September 11

September 11, 2026, marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Patriot Day is a solemn day of remembrance honoring the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives and recognizing the courage, sacrifice, and compassion shown by first responders, service members, and ordinary people during and after the tragedy.

What Is Patriot Day?

Patriot Day is observed annually on September 11 in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of 2001. Congress officially designated September 11 as Patriot Day in December 2001. In 2009, the day was also designated the National Day of Service and Remembrance, encouraging Americans to honor the victims through acts of service and community involvement.

Remembering September 11, 2001

On September 11, 2001, four commercial airplanes were hijacked. Two struck the World Trade Center in New York City, one struck the Pentagon, and another crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew attempted to take control of the aircraft. Nearly 3,000 people were killed.

The attacks affected families, communities, and people around the world. The events also brought profound attention to the courage of firefighters, police officers, emergency medical personnel, military members, and countless civilians who responded with extraordinary bravery and compassion.

At the Flight 93 site in Pennsylvania, the actions of 40 passengers and crew members are remembered as an effort that prevented the hijacked plane from reaching its intended target and potentially causing additional loss of life.

A Day to Honor Heroes

Patriot Day is not only about remembering those who were lost. It is also an opportunity to recognize the people who stepped forward to help others.

First responders and emergency workers faced extraordinary danger while helping those in need. In the years that followed, many responders and others affected by the attacks continued to experience physical and emotional consequences.

Their courage reminds us of the importance of compassion, service, and looking out for one another.

Turning Remembrance Into Service

September 11 is also recognized as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Communities can honor the legacy of those lost by helping others, volunteering, supporting neighbors, or participating in community service projects. The National Park Service encourages people to participate in service as a meaningful way to remember the sacrifices made on September 11 and afterward.

Even a simple act of kindness can reflect the spirit of unity and compassion that emerged in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Never Forget

Twenty-five years later, September 11 remains a day of reflection and remembrance. Patriot Day gives us an opportunity to honor the lives lost, remember the families and communities forever changed, and recognize the courage of those who responded.

As we observe Patriot Day 2026, may we continue to remember, honor, serve, and never forget.
